CAREER SUMMARY
After an initial appointment as Locum Consultant at the Pince of Wales Hospital All
Wales Treatment Centre Rhidlafar Cardiff,1994-1995, and then as Substanstive Consultant Prince Charles Hospital Merthyr Tydfil Wales, I was appointed as Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at The Royal Gwent Hospital, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. At the time there were only 2 foot and ankle surgeons for the whole of Wales with a population of 4 million. I set up the first dedicated foot and ankle service in Wales and only the second multidisciplinary diabetic service along with Professor Keith Harding of the Wound Healing Service. I also set up the limb reconstruction service and started the Ilizarof/ Taylor spatial frame treatment option to be available to the whole of South Wales.
In 2012 I created the Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr Foot and Ankle Centre of Excellence and coordinated the centralisation of foot and ankle services for the population of the County of Gwent. The served the largest population in Wales in perentage terms and now runs as one of the largest foot and ankle units offering secondary and tertiary foot and ankle surgical care. I have been the Clinical Lead for foot and ankle surgery of the county from 2001 to 2018 and have driven several innovative changes to the service including one stop shop foot and ankle clinics, a dedicated diabetic foot and ankle service, the inmplementation of Value Based Care, and one of the most popular traaining units in Wales. The unit runs monthly business meetings as well as Clinical Governance meetings. The unit has been showcased as the best unit for outcomes and throughput on more than one occasion by the Delivery and Service Unit of Welsh Government. It was also nominated for the Best Service award by the Staff and patients of the county in 2015. I was also personally nominated for the Best Clinician award by the South Wales Argus Awards committee and made the final 3 in 2017.
